Whether it is a new shop fit-out on the Kandy-Matale Road, an extra classroom block at a village school or a small office above a store near Wattegama Town, a handful of well-placed data points makes every later upgrade easier. We install Cat5e and Cat6 cabling sized to the property, with full patch-panel and rack setups where a larger site such as a school warrants it, and every run is tested and documented before the job is called finished. Most commercial buildings here are compact shophouses and single-storey or two-storey blocks, so the main planning questions are where the router and billing counter sit, where CCTV cameras will go and how cable reaches upstairs or a rear storeroom. For school campuses spread across several buildings, we plan the backbone first and add classroom points from it. Cabling is best designed before rooms are plastered and furnished, starting with a free site survey.

What we plan for in Wattegama

  • Shophouses along the main road often share walls and have limited ceiling space, so cables typically run in surface trunking or through upper floors, planned to stay neat and accessible.
  • CCTV, point-of-sale terminals and Wi-Fi access points in a Wattegama shop can share one cabling plan, which avoids separate messy runs installed by different contractors.
  • School buildings spread across open grounds need outdoor-rated or buried cable between blocks, with surge protection at each end because open ground attracts lightning strikes.

FAQ

Structured Cabling in Wattegama — questions

A single-counter shop usually needs points for the billing computer, receipt printer and router, plus one for each CCTV camera if they are wired. Adding one or two spare points near the counter and in the storeroom costs little during installation and saves re-cabling later. We walk the shop with you, mark each position and group the cables back to one small wall cabinet.

Usually, yes. In existing classrooms we route cables through ceiling voids, along corridors in trunking and down to wall-mounted points, drilling only where necessary. Between separate buildings we use buried conduit or an overhead catenary wire. The finished network is tested, labelled and recorded on a simple drawing so the school can extend it later without starting again.

Cat5e is the budget option and fine for basic needs; Cat6 is the sensible default for most modern offices; and Cat6a supports 10-gigabit speeds, worth it for server rooms and backbone runs but rarely necessary for individual desks. For most offices we run Cat6 to workstations and Cat6a only on the backbone.

We recommend two data points per desk — one for a computer and one spare for a phone, printer, or future need — rather than exactly one per person. Retrofitting a single missed point after the finishes are complete costs far more than including it upfront.

Cabling during construction, before walls close up, is significantly cheaper per point than retrofitting into a finished space, where cables must be routed around existing finishes. If you're planning a new fit-out, involve your cabling provider at the same stage as your electrician.

Yes. Every structured cabling installation includes termination, testing, and certification documentation. Untested cabling can look fine on day one and cause intermittent faults months later that are far more expensive to diagnose — so certification is standard, not an optional extra.

For a typical 20-person office in the Kandy area, professional structured cabling runs between LKR 150,000 and LKR 300,000 depending on cable type and layout complexity, including data points at each workstation, patch panels, a network cabinet, and testing certification. We provide a detailed quotation after a free site survey.
