Before a new classroom, office or shop in Menikdiwela gets its computers, the cabling behind them has to be right, and we take care of it from the first route to the final certificate. Village buildings here are often older and spread out, which tends to mean longer runs inside the structure and routes that must work around existing walls, beams and roofs. We map these on the site survey rather than discovering problems halfway through the job. Cat6 is our usual choice, with Cat5e kept for smaller installations where it is adequate, and every point is terminated, tested and recorded before handover. Each outlet is labelled at both ends and the documentation is left with you, so anyone working on the network later can see exactly what goes where without tracing cables by hand.
What we plan for in Menikdiwela
- Classroom blocks set at different levels on a slope are often joined by open walkways or steps, so cable between them runs in rigid conduit fixed along walls, or buried, rather than strung overhead.
- Copper Ethernet is limited to around 90 metres of permanent link, and where two buildings are further apart, fibre or a wireless link is considered once the actual distance has been measured.
- Older brick and plaster walls can crack when chased deeply, so neat surface trunking is often the safer and tidier choice in established village buildings.

FAQ
Structured Cabling in Menikdiwela — questions
Holiday periods are usually the best time, because rooms are empty and drilling or trunking work does not disturb lessons. The layout is agreed with the school beforehand, including where desks, the teacher's station and any projector will sit, so points land in the right places. Booking early helps, as holiday dates tend to be popular for school works of all kinds.
They can, and it often saves space and equipment. A small wall cabinet in a secure, dry spot can hold the patch panel and switch for both, with the shop points and house points labelled separately. If the family prefers to keep things apart, the two sets of points can still be run to one cabinet but connected to separate networks.
Cat5e is the budget option and fine for basic needs; Cat6 is the sensible default for most modern offices; and Cat6a supports 10-gigabit speeds, worth it for server rooms and backbone runs but rarely necessary for individual desks. For most offices we run Cat6 to workstations and Cat6a only on the backbone.
We recommend two data points per desk — one for a computer and one spare for a phone, printer, or future need — rather than exactly one per person. Retrofitting a single missed point after the finishes are complete costs far more than including it upfront.
Cabling during construction, before walls close up, is significantly cheaper per point than retrofitting into a finished space, where cables must be routed around existing finishes. If you're planning a new fit-out, involve your cabling provider at the same stage as your electrician.
Yes. Every structured cabling installation includes termination, testing, and certification documentation. Untested cabling can look fine on day one and cause intermittent faults months later that are far more expensive to diagnose — so certification is standard, not an optional extra.
For a typical 20-person office in the Kandy area, professional structured cabling runs between LKR 150,000 and LKR 300,000 depending on cable type and layout complexity, including data points at each workstation, patch panels, a network cabinet, and testing certification. We provide a detailed quotation after a free site survey.
